새 사람의 삶에 대한 권면(4:25-32)을 마무리하면서 사도는 하나님을 본받는 자가 되라고 합니다. 그리고 음행과 탐욕을 멀리하라고 경고합니다.

하나님과 예수님을 본받으라 

1그러므로 사랑을 받는 자녀 같이 너희는 하나님을 본받는 자가 되고 2그리스도께서 너희를 사랑하신 것 같이 너희도 사랑 가운데서 행하라 그는 우리를 위하여 자신을 버리사 향기로운 제물과 희생제물로 하나님께 드리셨느니라

 음행과 탐욕을 멀리하라 

 3음행과 온갖 더러운 것과 탐욕은 너희 중에서 그 이름조차도 부르지 말라 이는 성도에게 마땅한 바니라 4누추함과 어리석은 말이나 희롱의 말이 마땅치 아니하니 오히려 감사하는 말을 하라 5너희도 정녕 이것을 알거니와 음행하는 자나 더러운 자나 탐하는 자 곧 우상 숭배자는 다 그리스도와 하나님의 나라에서 기업을 얻지 못하리니 6누구든지 헛된 말로 너희를 속이지 못하게 하라 이로 말미암아 하나님의 진노가 불순종의 아들들에게 임하나니 7그러므로 그들과 함께 하는 자가 되지 말라

1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 

Who is God like?

Paul encourages believers to love as God and Christ loved us (vv. 1-2). Then Paul raises a serious issue: the problem of sexual immorality. In Paul’s time, sexual practices were common aspects of idol worship in the Anatolian regions. In his letter, Paul firmly commands the believers to abandon all sexual immorality, all impurity and covetousness, and to refrain from foolish and filthy talk. Paul warns that anyone who commits such deeds is an ‘idolater’ and will not be able to inherit God’s kingdom. He also warns believers not to be fooled by, or align themselves with, anyone who boasts of and speaks in support of such idolatry (vv. 3-7). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1- 2 We must love others in a manner that befits children who have been loved. God’s forgiveness and Christ’s sacrifice are the truest examples of love that we must strive to imitate. The cornerstone of our faith is love. If you are troubled by the lack of love in your heart, meditate deeply on God’s love for you. 

V. 4 Christians must resist ‘filthiness or foolish talk or crude joking’ and express ‘thankfulness’ with their words instead. Is your speech mostly crude talk or words of thankfulness? What words of gratitude should you express to God and those around you today? 

Prayer

Lord, help me to love in a manner that befits someone who has received love and to stay away from the idol of sexual immorality.
