에베소 성도에게 시간을 선용하고 주의 뜻을 이해함으로써 지혜롭게 살라고 촉구합니다. 또 성령에 충만하여 예배와 감사와 상호 복종의 삶을 살라고 합니다.

지혜로운 자처럼 살라 

15그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여 지혜 없는 자 같이 하지 말고 오직 지혜 있는 자 같이 하여 16세월을 아끼라 때가 악하니라 17그러므로 어리석은 자가 되지 말고 오직 주의 뜻이 무엇인가 이해하라

 성령의 충만함을 받으라 

 18술 취하지 말라 이는 방탕한 것이니 오직 성령으로 충만함을 받으라 19시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답하며 너희의 마음으로 주께 노래하며 찬송하며 20범사에 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 항상 아버지 하나님께 감사하며 21그리스도를 경외함으로 피차 복종하라

15Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Pauls urges believers to live as wise people. Wise people are cautious, carefully inspect their surroundings, and discern God’s will and use every moment as an opportunity to obey it (vv. 15-17). Paul then tells the believers not to become drunk with wine but to be filled by the Holy Spirit. This is because wine interferes with wise and cautious judgement and makes us addicted to pleasures of the flesh. Wine also used to be connected to the idol worship of the Anatolian region. In contrast, those who are filled with the Holy Spirit praise God with psalms and hymns that overflow from the heart and willingly submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (vv. 18-21). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 15-17 Children of light must consider God’s will at every moment. In order to avoid getting swept up in the wicked customs of the world, we mustn’t let our guard down even for a second. How much time do you waste in a day by mindlessly partaking in the works of darkness? Let’s make every moment of every day an opportunity to obey God’s will. 

Vv. 18-21 The Lord alone deserves our worship, thanksgiving and reverence. The Lord desires with his whole heart (v. 17) for us to worship him, acknowledge him in all things and treat others as we would the Lord. This is why we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It would be impossible for us to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and submit to his sovereignty at all times without the working of the Holy Spirit. 

Prayer

Lord, help me to live wisely in the fullness of the Holy Spirit by understanding your will and using my time preciously.
