다윗은 사울과 요나단의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 애가를 지어 부르고, 이 노래를 유다 족속에게 가르쳐서 공동체가 함께 애도하도록 합니다.

애가를 지어 가르친 다윗 

17다윗이 이 슬픈 노래로 사울과 그의 아들 요나단을 조상하고 18명령하여 그것을 유다 족속에게 가르치라 하였으니 곧 활 노래라 야살의 책에 기록되었으되

 잃어버린 이스라엘의 영광 

 19이스라엘아 네 영광이 산 위에서 죽임을 당하였도다 오호라 두 용사가 엎드러졌도다 20이 일을 가드에도 알리지 말며 아스글론 거리에도 전파하지 말지어다 블레셋 사람들의 딸들이 즐거워할까, 할례 받지 못한 자의 딸들이 개가를 부를까 염려로다 21길보아 산들아 너희 위에 이슬과 비가 내리지 아니하며 제물 낼 밭도 없을지어다 거기서 두 용사의 방패가 버린 바 됨이니라 곧 사울의 방패가 기름 부음을 받지 아니함 같이 됨이로다

 두 용사의 죽음을 애도 

 22죽은 자의 피에서, 용사의 기름에서 요나단의 활이 뒤로 물러가지 아니하였으며 사울의 칼이 헛되이 돌아오지 아니하였도다 23사울과 요나단이 생전에 사랑스럽고 아름다운 자이러니 죽을 때에도 서로 떠나지 아니하였도다 그들은 독수리보다 빠르고 사자보다 강하였도다 24이스라엘 딸들아 사울을 슬퍼하여 울지어다 그가 붉은 옷으로 너희에게 화려하게 입혔고 금 노리개를 너희 옷에 채웠도다 25오호라 두 용사가 전쟁 중에 엎드러졌도다 요나단이 네 산 위에서 죽임을 당하였도다

 요나단의 죽음을 애도 

 26내 형 요나단이여 내가 그대를 애통함은 그대는 내게 심히 아름다움이라 그대가 나를 사랑함이 기이하여 여인의 사랑보다 더하였도다 27오호라 두 용사가 엎드러졌으며 싸우는 무기가 망하였도다 하였더라

17And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son,18 and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar. He said:19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.21 “You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.22 “From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.25 “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! “Jonathan lies slain on your high places.26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.27 “How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!”  

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding 

David composed a song of lament, taught it to the people and had it written down so that all Israel could mourn together. The tragic death of the king meant the stability of the kingdom was at risk. The Israelites, including David, knew that their enemy wasn’t Saul but the Philistines. So, in his song of lament, David referred to Saul and Jonathan as ‘the glory of Israel’ and ‘the mighty’ (v. 19) and praised the valour they had demonstrated in battle. David particularly deeply mourned the death of his beloved friend Jonathan (vv. 25-26).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 17-27 David was not a hypocritical person who cried on the outside while laughing on the inside. Saul’s death was good news that meant David was finally free from his life as a fugitive, but David did not rejoice. He grieved with a pure heart. He also worried about the difficulties that now confronted Israel. Let’s pray that our religious and political leaders will serve the people with a heart like David. 

V. 26 David mourned Jonathan’s death because of the extraordinary love that Jonathan had demonstrated towards him. David was able to escape from Saul and pursue the will of God because of Jonathan. Jonathan’s love transcended blood ties. Our friend, Jesus, also loves us in this same way. 

Prayer

Lord, help me to understand more deeply the sacrificial love of Jesus so that I too may become an instrument of love.
