혼자 달리지 말라 Don't run alone. [ 출애굽기 17:8 - 17:13 ] - 찬송가 92 장
이러므로 우리에게 구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니…인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며
(히브리서 12:1)

우리 남편 잭이 마라톤(42.195km) 경주 중 40km 지점에 이르렀을 때 힘이 다 빠져버렸습니다.
그것은 그의 생애 첫 마라톤이었는데, 남편 혼자 달리고 있었습니다. 급수대에서 물을 마시려고 잠시 멈춘 그는 매우 지쳐서 코스 옆 잔디 위에 앉았습니다. 그런데 몇 분이 지나도 일어설 수가 없었습니다. 그만 경주를 포기하려고 하는데 켄터키에서 온 중년 교사 두 명이 다가왔습니다. 모르는 사람들이었지만 그들은 잭의 상태를 알아보고 자기들과 함께 뛰지 않겠냐고 물었습니다. 잭은 갑자기 체력이 회복되는 것을 느끼고는, 일어나 두 여성과 함께 뛰어 경주를 마쳤습니다.

잭을 격려했던 두 여성은 아주 중요한 순간에 이스라엘 백성의 지도자 모세를 도왔던 두 친구 아론과 훌을 생각나게 합니다(출 17:8-13). 이스라엘 백성들이 공격을 받고 있었는데, 모세가 그의 지팡이를 들고 있는 동안에만 전투에서 이겼습니다(11절). 그래서 아론과 훌은 모세의 체력이 소진했을 때 그의 양쪽에 서서 해가 지기까지 그의 팔을 들어주었습니다(12절).

하나님을 따르는 것은 혼자만의 노력으로 되지 않습니다. 하나님은 우리가 삶의 경주를 홀로 달리도록 창조하지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 하나님의 일을 하며 겪는 어려움을 견뎌내도록 동역자들이 도와줄 수 있습니다.

9. 모세가 여호수아에게 이르되 우리를 위하여 사람들을 택하여 나가서 아말렉과 싸우라 내일 내가 하나님의 지팡이를 손에 잡고 산 꼭대기에 서리라
10. 여호수아가 모세의 말대로 행하여 아말렉과 싸우고 모세와 아론과 훌은 산 꼭대기에 올라가서
11. 모세가 손을 들면 이스라엘이 이기고 손을 내리면 아말렉이 이기더니
12. 모세의 팔이 피곤하매 그들이 돌을 가져다가 모세의 아래에 놓아 그가 그 위에 앉게 하고 아론과 훌이 한 사람은 이쪽에서, 한 사람은 저쪽에서 모세의 손을 붙들어 올렸더니 그 손이 해가 지도록 내려오지 아니한지라
13. 여호수아가 칼날로 아말렉과 그 백성을 쳐서 무찌르니라

Don’t Run Alone [ Exodus 17:8 - 17:13 ] - hymn 92
Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses . . . let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

My husband Jack was on mile 25 out of 26 when his strength failed him.
This was his first marathon, and he was running alone. After stopping for a drink of water at an aid station, he felt exhausted and sat down on the grass beside the course. Minutes passed, and he couldn’t get up. He had resigned himself to quitting the race when two middle-aged schoolteachers from Kentucky came by. Although they were strangers, they noticed Jack and asked if he wanted to run with them. Suddenly, he found his strength restored. Jack stood and accompanied by the two women he finished the race.
Those women who encouraged Jack remind me of Aaron and Hur, two friends who helped Moses, the leader of the Israelites, at a key point(Ex. 17:8–13). The Israelites were under attack. In battle, they were winning only as long as Moses held his staff up(v. 11). So when Moses’s strength began to fail, Aaron and Hur stood on either side of him, holding up his arms for him until sunset(v. 12).
Following God is not a solo endeavor. He did not create us to run the race of life alone. Companions can help us persevere through difficulty as we do what God has called us to do.
God, thank you for relationships that encourage me to continue following you. Help me to be a source of strength for others, as well. —Amy Peterson

8. The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
9. Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands."
10. So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
11. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.
12. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up -- one on one side, one on the other -- so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
13. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
