요압의 아벨성 공격 계획 

14세바가 이스라엘 모든 지파 가운데 두루 다녀서 아벨과 벧마아가와 베림 온 땅에 이르니 그 무리도 다 모여 그를 따르더라 15이에 그들이 벧마아가 아벨로 가서 세바를 에우고 그 성읍을 향한 지역 언덕 위에 토성을 쌓고 요압과 함께 한 모든 백성이 성벽을 쳐서 헐고자 하더니

 아벨성의 지혜로운 여인 

 16그 성읍에서 지혜로운 여인 한 사람이 외쳐 이르되 들을지어다 들을지어다 청하건대 너희는 요압에게 이르기를 이리로 가까이 오라 내가 네게 말하려 하노라 한다 하라 17요압이 그 여인에게 가까이 가니 여인이 이르되 당신이 요압이니이까 하니 대답하되 그러하다 하니라 여인이 그에게 이르되 여종의 말을 들으소서 하니 대답하되 내가 들으리라 하니라 18여인이 말하여 이르되 옛 사람들이 흔히 말하기를 아벨에게 가서 물을 것이라 하고 그 일을 끝내었나이다 19나는 이스라엘의 화평하고 충성된 자 중 하나이거늘 당신이 이스라엘 가운데 어머니 같은 성을 멸하고자 하시는도다 어찌하여 당신이 여호와의 기업을 삼키고자 하시나이까 하니 20요압이 대답하여 이르되 결단코 그렇지 아니하다 결단코 그렇지 아니하다 삼키거나 멸하거나 하려 함이 아니니 21그 일이 그러한 것이 아니니라 에브라임 산지 사람 비그리의 아들 그의 이름을 세바라 하는 자가 손을 들어 왕 다윗을 대적하였나니 너희가 그만 내주면 내가 이 성벽에서 떠나가리라 하니라 여인이 요압에게 이르되 그의 머리를 성벽에서 당신에게 내어던지리이다 하고 22이에 여인이 그의 지혜를 가지고 모든 백성에게 나아가매 그들이 비그리의 아들 세바의 머리를 베어 요압에게 던진지라 이에 요압이 나팔을 불매 무리가 흩어져 성읍에서 물러나 각기 장막으로 돌아가고 요압은 예루살렘으로 돌아와 왕에게 나아가니라

 다윗의 조직 개편 

 23요압은 이스라엘 온 군대의 지휘관이 되고 여호야다의 아들 브나야는 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람의 지휘관이 되고 24아도람은 감역관이 되고 아힐룻의 아들 여호사밧은 사관이 되고 25스와는 서기관이 되고 사독과 아비아달은 제사장이 되고 26야일 사람 이라는 다윗의 대신이 되니라

14And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah, and all the Bichrites assembled and followed him in.15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down.16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’”17 And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”18 Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter.19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the LORD?”20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy!21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.”22 Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.23 Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;24 and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;25 and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;26 and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest.

Sheba mustered up a rebel army around the region of Abel, which was besieged by the army of Joab, who planned to suppress the rebellion. At this time, a wise woman of Abel persuaded Joab to pursue a different strategy. By her intercession, the people of the city punished Sheba so Joab no longer needed to destroy the city (vv. 14-22). After quelling Absalom and Sheba’s rebellions, David reorganised his government. To prevent further civil discord and rebellions, he distributed authority within the government in a way in which they could keep one another in check (vv. 23-26). 

Who is God?

Vv. 16-22 Just as God helped David through Abigail and a woman of Bahurim in the past, this time God ended Sheba’s rebellion and protected David’s kingdom through a woman of Abel. Although the world argues that women are weak, they are strong in the eyes of God. How are you being used for your community? 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 16-22 The rebellion was brought to an end not by the sword of Joab but by the wise words of a wise woman. Joab could have ended the rebellion with his method, but it required the destruction of a precious city of Israel. Strength and violence do not just destroy enemies but also destroys the self.

Lord, help me to hear your voice when you speak to me through the lowly and weak.
