다윗 곁에는 가장 출중한 3인의 용사 외에도 다양한 지파와 지역에 속한 많은 용사가 있었습니다. 하나님 나라는 이들 모두의 헌신과 믿음으로 세워졌습니다.

아비새와 브나야의 전적 

18또 스루야의 아들 요압의 아우 아비새이니 그는 그 세 사람의 우두머리라 그가 그의 창을 들어 삼백 명을 죽이고 세 사람 중에 이름을 얻었으니 19그는 세 사람 중에 가장 존귀한 자가 아니냐 그가 그들의 우두머리가 되었으나 그러나 첫 세 사람에게는 미치지 못하였더라 20또 갑스엘 용사의 손자 여호야다의 아들 브나야이니 그는 용맹스런 일을 행한 자라 일찍이 모압 아리엘의 아들 둘을 죽였고 또 눈이 올 때에 구덩이에 내려가서 사자 한 마리를 쳐죽였으며 21또 장대한 애굽 사람을 죽였는데 그의 손에 창이 있어도 그가 막대기를 가지고 내려가 그 애굽 사람의 손에서 창을 빼앗아 그 창으로 그를 죽였더라 22여호야다의 아들 브나야가 이런 일을 행하였으므로 세 용사 중에 이름을 얻고 23삼십 명보다 존귀하나 그러나 세 사람에게는 미치지 못하였더라 다윗이 그를 세워 시위대 대장을 삼았더라

39절) 삼십 명 명단의 총수가 ‘삼십칠 명’인 이유는 일부가 죽고 일부는 새로 임명되었기 때문일 것이다.

18Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against three hundred men and killed them and won a name beside the three.19 He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three.20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two ariels of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen.21 And he struck down an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men.23 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,25 Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod,26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa,27 Abiezer of Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite,28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah,29 Heleb the son of Baanah of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the people of Benjamin,30 Benaiah of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash,31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth of Bahurim,32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite,34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai of Maacah, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,35 Hezro of Carmel, Paarai the Arbite,36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, the armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah,38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,39 Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

In addition to the three most valiant warriors, David introduced Abishai, the brother of Joab and the chief of thirty, and David’s guard Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada (vv. 18-23). Then he listed the names of the thirty-seven men who comprised the special army of thirty. These men came from various backgrounds, including the tribe of Judah, the tribes of northern Israel and foreign nations. These men were loyal to the point of willingly risking their lives to protect David and Israel (vv. 24-39). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 18-39 The men who served David came from various backgrounds. Although they came from different backgrounds, they all followed God’s will and served David together. Is anything obstructing the unity of your church community? What efforts should be made to break down that wall? 

Vv. 24-39 The names of all the members of the special army of thirty are listed. They all served God’s kingdom only for a short while, but their names were recorded in the Bible so that they could be remembered by countless Christians. How would you like your life to be remembered by future generations? Let’s live blameless lives so that the names we leave behind will not be tainted.

Lord, help us to break down all the walls obstructing the unity of our community.
