[ 전도서 7:15 - 7:29 ] (찬송453장)

교만을 피하고 하나님을 경외하라 

15내 허무한 날을 사는 동안 내가 그 모든 일을 살펴 보았더니 자기의 의로움에도 불구하고 멸망하는 의인이 있고 자기의 악행에도 불구하고 장수하는 악인이 있으니 16지나치게 의인이 되지도 말며 지나치게 지혜자도 되지 말라 어찌하여 스스로 패망하게 하겠느냐 17지나치게 악인이 되지도 말며 지나치게 우매한 자도 되지 말라 어찌하여 기한 전에 죽으려고 하느냐 18너는 이것도 잡으며 저것에서도 네 손을 놓지 아니하는 것이 좋으니 하나님을 경외하는 자는 이 모든 일에서 벗어날 것임이니라

 스스로 의롭다고 생각하지 말라 

 19지혜가 지혜자를 성읍 가운데에 있는 열 명의 권력자들보다 더 능력이 있게 하느니라 20선을 행하고 전혀 죄를 범하지 아니하는 의인은 세상에 없기 때문이로다 21또한 사람들이 하는 모든 말에 네 마음을 두지 말라 그리하면 네 종이 너를 저주하는 것을 듣지 아니하리라 22너도 가끔 사람을 저주하였다는 것을 네 마음도 알고 있느니라

 세상의 이치를 다 깨달을 수 없다 

 23내가 이 모든 것을 지혜로 시험하며 스스로 이르기를 내가 지혜자가 되리라 하였으나 지혜가 나를 멀리 하였도다 24이미 있는 것은 멀고 또 깊고 깊도다 누가 능히 통달하랴 25내가 돌이켜 전심으로 지혜와 명철을 살피고 연구하여 악한 것이 얼마나 어리석은 것이요 어리석은 것이 얼마나 미친 것인 줄을 알고자 하였더니 26마음은 올무와 그물 같고 손은 포승 같은 여인은 사망보다 더 쓰다는 사실을 내가 알아내었도다 그러므로 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 자는 그 여인을 피하려니와 죄인은 그 여인에게 붙잡히리로다 27전도자가 이르되 보라 내가 낱낱이 살펴 그 이치를 연구하여 이것을 깨달았노라 28내 마음이 계속 찾아 보았으나 아직도 찾지 못한 것이 이것이라 천 사람 가운데서 한 사람을 내가 찾았으나 이 모든 사람들 중에서 여자는 한 사람도 찾지 못하였느니라 29내가 깨달은 것은 오직 이것이라 곧 하나님은 사람을 정직하게 지으셨으나 사람이 많은 꾀들을 낸 것이니라

[ Ecclesiastes 7:15 - 7:29 ]

15In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing.16 Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?17 Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?18 It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.9 Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.21 Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you.22 Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.23 All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me.24 That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out?25 I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.26 And I find something more bitter than death: the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her.27 Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things—28which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found.29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The preacher rejected the traditional idea that good works were rewarded. He warned that extreme righteousness and wisdom could lead to self-destruction and extreme evil and foolishness could shorten our lives. Therefore, a wise life meant fearing God and avoiding extremes (vv. 15-20). He also advised that we shouldn’t be excessively concerned about the words of others. He confessed that he himself had tried and failed in his search for wisdom for the sake of a perfect life. However, he had realised in the process that God had made human beings plain and simple (vv. 21-29). 

Who is God?

V. 29 God made human beings upright (v. 29). Therefore, we are wholly responsible for the immorality and injustices that fill this world. How should you restore your uprightness today to restore God’s order of creation? 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 15-22 We must avoid living in an extreme manner. A life of abstinence, extreme rules, and extreme doctrines or ideologies interfere with living ordinary lives. An ordinary life is a gift from God. Is there something extreme about your faith, mindset or way of living? 

Prayer

Lord, help me to restore the uprightness that you created within me.
