성도들의 올바른 신앙을 격려함 

12자녀들아 내가 너희에게 쓰는 것은 너희 죄가 그의 이름으로 말미암아 사함을 받았음이요 13아비들아 내가 너희에게 쓰는 것은 너희가 태초부터 계신 이를 알았음이요 청년들아 내가 너희에게 쓰는 것은 너희가 악한 자를 이기었음이라 14아이들아 내가 너희에게 쓴 것은 너희가 아버지를 알았음이요 아비들아 내가 너희에게 쓴 것은 너희가 태초부터 계신 이를 알았음이요 청년들아 내가 너희에게 쓴 것은 너희가 강하고 하나님의 말씀이 너희 안에 거하시며 너희가 흉악한 자를 이기었음이라

 사랑하지 말아야 할 것과 사랑해야 할 것 

 15이 세상이나 세상에 있는 것들을 사랑하지 말라 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 아버지의 사랑이 그 안에 있지 아니하니 16이는 세상에 있는 모든 것이 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕과 이생의 자랑이니 다 아버지께로부터 온 것이 아니요 세상으로부터 온 것이라 17이 세상도, 그 정욕도 지나가되 오직 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 자는 영원히 거하느니라

 마지막 때와 적그리스도 

 18아이들아 지금은 마지막 때라 적그리스도가 오리라는 말을 너희가 들은 것과 같이 지금도 많은 적그리스도가 일어났으니 그러므로 우리가 마지막 때인 줄 아노라 19그들이 우리에게서 나갔으나 우리에게 속하지 아니하였나니 만일 우리에게 속하였더라면 우리와 함께 거하였으려니와 그들이 나간 것은 다 우리에게 속하지 아니함을 나타내려 함이니라 20너희는 거룩하신 자에게서 기름 부음을 받고 모든 것을 아느니라 21내가 너희에게 쓰는 것은 너희가 진리를 알지 못하기 때문이 아니라 알기 때문이요 또 모든 거짓은 진리에서 나지 않기 때문이라 22거짓말하는 자가 누구냐 예수께서 그리스도이심을 부인하는 자가 아니냐 아버지와 아들을 부인하는 그가 적그리스도니 23아들을 부인하는 자에게는 또한 아버지가 없으되 아들을 시인하는 자에게는 아버지도 있느니라

 처음부터 들은 것 안에 거하라 

 24너희는 처음부터 들은 것을 너희 안에 거하게 하라 처음부터 들은 것이 너희 안에 거하면 너희가 아들과 아버지 안에 거하리라 25그가 우리에게 약속하신 것은 이것이니 곧 영원한 생명이니라 26너희를 미혹하는 자들에 관하여 내가 이것을 너희에게 썼노라 27너희는 주께 받은 바 기름 부음이 너희 안에 거하나니 아무도 너희를 가르칠 필요가 없고 오직 그의 기름 부음이 모든 것을 너희에게 가르치며 또 참되고 거짓이 없으니 너희를 가르치신 그대로 주 안에 거하라

 예수님 안에 거하라 

 28자녀들아 이제 그의 안에 거하라 이는 주께서 나타내신 바 되면 그가 강림하실 때에 우리로 담대함을 얻어 그 앞에서 부끄럽지 않게 하려 함이라 29너희가 그가 의로우신 줄을 알면 의를 행하는 자마다 그에게서 난 줄을 알리라

12I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father.14 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men,  because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Apostle John declared that all the believers of the early church, from parents to children, had good knowledge of the forgiveness and teachings of Jesus. Then he encouraged the believers of the early church not to be shaken by new and exciting heretical ideologies but to continue as they had been doing. He stressed that anyone who denied Jesus could not serve God as their father (vv. 12-23). John encouraged the believers to dwell in God by holding onto the gospel they had ‘heard from the beginning’ and to practice righteousness (vv. 24-29). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 12-14 Believers gain the ultimate victory in this wicked world. Anyone who seeks forgiveness for their sins, knows God, and keeps God’s Word in their hearts can overcome evil. What evil do you need to fight against today? Keep God’s word in your heart and overcome evil by trusting in the voice of God who will declare your victory. 

Vv. 20, 27 Believers know all things because they are taught by the Holy Spirit. This does not mean that they don’t have anything left to learn but that the ability to understand the Word is not exclusive to a special minority. Rather than just relying on others for knowledge, let’s read the Word ourselves and receive the teaching of the Holy Spirit. Only then can we gain the strength to overcome false ideologies. 

Prayer

Lord, help me not to be shaken by evil, false teachings and worldly greed but to always dwell in the truth.
