사랑하는 것이 마땅하다 

11사랑하는 자들아 하나님이 이같이 우리를 사랑하셨은즉 우리도 서로 사랑하는 것이 마땅하도다 12어느 때나 하나님을 본 사람이 없으되 만일 우리가 서로 사랑하면 하나님이 우리 안에 거하시고 그의 사랑이 우리 안에 온전히 이루어지느니라 13그의 성령을 우리에게 주시므로 우리가 그 안에 거하고 그가 우리 안에 거하시는 줄을 아느니라

 예수님에 대한 바른 앎과 하나님의 내주하심

 14아버지가 아들을 세상의 구주로 보내신 것을 우리가 보았고 또 증언하노니 15누구든지 예수를 하나님의 아들이라 시인하면 하나님이 그의 안에 거하시고 그도 하나님 안에 거하느니라 16하나님이 우리를 사랑하시는 사랑을 우리가 알고 믿었노니 하나님은 사랑이시라 사랑 안에 거하는 자는 하나님 안에 거하고 하나님도 그의 안에 거하시느니라

 심판의 두려움을 쫓아내는 온전한 사랑

 17이로써 사랑이 우리에게 온전히 이루어진 것은 우리로 심판 날에 담대함을 가지게 하려 함이니 주께서 그러하심과 같이 우리도 이 세상에서 그러하니라 18사랑 안에 두려움이 없고 온전한 사랑이 두려움을 내쫓나니 두려움에는 형벌이 있음이라 두려워하는 자는 사랑 안에서 온전히 이루지 못하였느니라

 형제 사랑으로 증명되는 하나님 사랑

 19우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨음이라 20누구든지 하나님을 사랑하노라 하고 그 형제를 미워하면 이는 거짓말하는 자니 보는 바 그 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 보지 못하는 바 하나님을 사랑할 수 없느니라 21우리가 이 계명을 주께 받았나니 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 또한 그 형제를 사랑할지니라

11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.19 We love because he first loved us.20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Apostle John continued to explain why believers must love one another. When we love one another, God abides in us and we abide in God (vv. 11-16). When we love others, love becomes perfected in us, and on the day of judgement, we will be able stand boldly before the judgement seat of Christ. This is because our love for God, who is invisible, is proven through our love for our brothers and sisters. More importantly, we must love our neighbours because God has commanded us to do so (vv. 17-21). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 12 Love is perfected in us when we love one another. This shows that the ultimate purpose of God’s love is us loving one another. The world will come to see Jesus, our Saviour Lord (v. 14) and the embodiment of God’s love, when they see believers becoming united through love. What is your church community like? Let’s erase all hate in our hearts and actively practice love. 

Vv. 17- 18 Love drives away fear. On the day of judgement, it is ‘love’ that will allow us to stand boldly without fear. A life of sharing the love that one has received from God and others is the surest proof of salvation. Faith without love is like a castle built on sand. 

Prayer

Lord, help me to follow your example of perfect love by loving others without any hint of deceit.
