예수님을 그리스도와 하나님의 아들로 믿는 하나님의 자녀는, 서로 사랑하고 성령이 보이신 증거를 믿으며 아들 안에 영생이 있음을 믿고 그 생명을 받습니다.

사랑의 계명에 순종하는 하나님의 자녀 

1예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자니 또한 낳으신 이를 사랑하는 자마다 그에게서 난 자를 사랑하느니라 2우리가 하나님을 사랑하고 그의 계명들을 지킬 때에 이로써 우리가 하나님의 자녀를 사랑하는 줄을 아느니라 3하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키는 것이라 그의 계명들은 무거운 것이 아니로다

 세상을 이기는 믿음 

 4무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라 5예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐

 아들 예수를 위한 하나님의 증언 

 6이는 물과 피로 임하신 이시니 곧 예수 그리스도시라 물로만 아니요 물과 피로 임하셨고 증언하는 이는 성령이시니 성령은 진리니라 7증언하는 이가 셋이니 8성령과 물과 피라 또한 이 셋은 합하여 하나이니라 9만일 우리가 사람들의 증언을 받을진대 하나님의 증거는 더욱 크도다 하나님의 증거는 이것이니 그의 아들에 대하여 증언하신 것이니라 10하나님의 아들을 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거가 있고 하나님을 믿지 아니하는 자는 하나님을 거짓말하는 자로 만드나니 이는 하나님께서 그 아들에 대하여 증언하신 증거를 믿지 아니하였음이라

 아들 안에 있는 영생 

 11또 증거는 이것이니 하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이니라 12아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라

[ 1 John 5:1 - 5:12 ]

1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?6 This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.7 For there are three that testify:8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Apostle John explained that believers could overcome the world by faith and instructed believers to love by keeping God’s commandments. This is because all of God’s commandments teach us to love (Matt. 22:40) (vv. 1-5). John emphasised that the Son of God shed his blood and died for us (vv. 6-8). The faith of a believer is made firm by Jesus’s ministry on this earth, God’s testimony, and the eternal life that is in believers (vv. 9-12). 

Who is God?

Vv. 6-10 Water and blood are the proof of Jesus’ incarnation, and Jesus’ baptism (water) and his death on the cross (blood) represent Jesus’ ministry. They prove the falseness of heretical believers who try to separate the human Jesus from Jesus as Christ. Anyone who claims to believe in God while refusing to believe that Jesus is the Son of God is a liar. This is because God revealed himself and demonstrated his love through his son Jesus. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 11-12 God gave us eternal life by putting that life in Jesus. Serving Jesus is the way to gain eternal life, to prove that we have eternal life, and to enjoy eternal life. Are you serving Jesus in every aspect of your life? In which areas of your life are you failing to do so?

God, help me to fear you and to recognize the abundant evidence that Jesus is our King.
