교회를 향한 장로의 문안 인사 

1장로인 나는 택하심을 받은 부녀와 그의 자녀들에게 편지하노니 내가 참으로 사랑하는 자요 나뿐 아니라 진리를 아는 모든 자도 그리하는 것은 2우리 안에 거하여 영원히 우리와 함께 할 진리로 말미암음이로다 3은혜와 긍휼과 평강이 하나님 아버지와 아버지의 아들 예수 그리스도께로부터 진리와 사랑 가운데서 우리와 함께 있으리라

 진리 안에서 사랑의 교훈을 따라 행하라 

 4너의 자녀들 중에 우리가 아버지께 받은 계명대로 진리를 행하는 자를 내가 보니 심히 기쁘도다 5부녀여, 내가 이제 네게 구하노니 서로 사랑하자 이는 새 계명 같이 네게 쓰는 것이 아니요 처음부터 우리가 가진 것이라 6또 사랑은 이것이니 우리가 그 계명을 따라 행하는 것이요 계명은 이것이니 너희가 처음부터 들은 바와 같이 그 가운데서 행하라 하심이라

1The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth,2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father.5 And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another.6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

The elder greeted the recipients of his letter by proclaiming that he loved them in truth and praying for God to bestow on them grace, mercy and peace (vv. 1-3). The believers receiving the letter tried to live in accordance with the truth, but they had begun to neglect their duty to love one another. So, while praising them for trying to walk in the truth, in God’s commandments, the elder also urged the believers to continue loving one another. This is because truth and love are one and the same. Loving one another is the way to keep God’s commandments (vv. 4-6). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

V. 3 God gives us grace, mercy and peace. These three elements can only be understood through salvation as they were bestowed on us through Jesus Christ, the ‘Son of the Father’. Therefore, when we gain deep knowledge and understanding of who Jesus is and what he did for us, we can enjoy the grace of salvation in truth and love. 

Vv. 4-6 John’s understanding of the truth was that the ‘truth guides us towards love’. If we have become people of love, it means we have understood the truth and practice the truth. Therefore, how we treat our family members, our co-workers, our church family, our friends, and our neighbours, whom we interact with on a day-to-day basis, is the key to discerning whether we are dwelling in the truth.

Lord, help me to enjoy grace, mercy and peace by following the truth and practicing love.
