이스라엘 백성에게 유월절은 하나님이 구원하신 백성이라는 정체성을 확인하는 날이었습니다. 그들은 시내산을 떠나 가나안으로 출발하기 전에 유월절을 지킵니다. 

[ 민수기 9:1 - 9:14 ] (찬송265장)

1애굽 땅에서 나온 다음 해 첫째 달에 여호와께서 시내 광야에서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 2이스라엘 자손에게 유월절을 그 정한 기일에 지키게 하라 3그 정한 기일 곧 이 달 열넷째 날 해 질 때에 너희는 그것을 지키되 그 모든 율례와 그 모든 규례대로 지킬지니라 4모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 유월절을 지키라 하매 5그들이 첫째 달 열넷째 날 해 질 때에 시내 광야에서 유월절을 지켰으되 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 것을 다 따라 행하였더라

 6그 때에 사람의 시체로 말미암아 부정하게 되어서 유월절을 지킬 수 없는 사람들이 있었는데 그들이 그 날에 모세와 아론 앞에 이르러 7그에게 이르되 우리가 사람의 시체로 말미암아 부정하게 되었거니와 우리를 금지하여 이스라엘 자손과 함께 정한 기일에 여호와께 헌물을 드리지 못하게 하심은 어찌함이니이까 8모세가 그들에게 이르되 기다리라 여호와께서 너희에게 대하여 어떻게 명령하시는지 내가 들으리라 9여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 10이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르라 너희나 너희 후손 중에 시체로 말미암아 부정하게 되든지 먼 여행 중에 있다 할지라도 다 여호와 앞에 마땅히 유월절을 지키되 11둘째 달 열넷째 날 해 질 때에 그것을 지켜서 어린 양에 무교병과 쓴 나물을 아울러 먹을 것이요 12아침까지 그것을 조금도 남겨두지 말며 그 뼈를 하나도 꺾지 말아서 유월절 모든 율례대로 지킬 것이니라 13그러나 사람이 정결하기도 하고 여행 중에도 있지 아니하면서 유월절을 지키지 아니하는 자는 그 백성 중에서 끊어지리니 이런 사람은 그 정한 기일에 여호와께 헌물을 드리지 아니하였은즉 그의 죄를 담당할지며 14만일 타국인이 너희 중에 거류하여 여호와 앞에 유월절을 지키고자 하면 유월절 율례대로 그 규례를 따라서 행할지니 거류민에게나 본토인에게나 그 율례는 동일할 것이니라

1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,2 “Let the people of Israel keep the Passover at its appointed time.3 On the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight, you shall keep it at its appointed time; according to all its statutes and all its rules you shall keep it.”4 So Moses told the people of Israel that they should keep the Passover.5 And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the people of Israel did.6 And there were certain men who were unclean through touching a dead body, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day, and they came before Moses and Aaron on that day.7 And those men said to him, “We are unclean through touching a dead body. Why are we kept from bringing the LORD’s offering at its appointed time among the people of Israel?”8 And Moses said to them, “Wait, that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you.”9 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,10 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If any one of you or of your descendants is unclean through touching a dead body, or is on a long journey, he shall still keep the Passover to the LORD.11 In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight they shall keep it. They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.12 They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.13 But if anyone who is clean and is not on a journey fails to keep the Passover, that person shall be cut off from his people because he did not bring the LORD’s offering at its appointed time; that man shall bear his sin.14 And if a stranger sojourns among you and would keep the Passover to the LORD, according to the statute of the Passover and according to its rule, so shall he do. You shall have one statute, both for the sojourner and for the native.” 

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

God commanded the Israelites to keep the Passover every year to commemorate their exodus (see Exo. 12:1-28). The Israelites observed the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month of their second year in the wilderness (vv. 1-5). Those who could not observe the Passover because they had become unclean through contact with the dead were allowed to observe the Passover a month later. God even allowed foreigners the opportunity to participate in the Passover, allowing them to follow the same regulations as the people of Israel (vv. 6-14). 

Who is God?

Vv. 8- 9 God is not a cold judge who merely judges ‘according to the law and statutes’, but a merciful father who hears people’s pleas and gives them an opportunity. God opened a path not only for unclean people but also for Gentiles to become people of God. Are there any regulations of faith that you must ‘absolutely’ follow? Is there something that you disallow that has been allowed by God? 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 6- 7 A group of people who had become unclean actively pleaded for an opportunity to participate in the Passover. They did not wish to be excluded from God’s blessing. Have you ever been in a situation where circumstances outside your control rendered you unable to keep your faith-related duties? How did you react?

Lord, help me to use the freedom provided by faith not as a license to self-indulge but as an opportunity to seek even more abundant blessings.
