마태복음을 여는 긴 족보는 구약과 신약이 하나의 이야기이며, 예수님이 아브라함과 다윗의 자손으로서 하나님의 약속을 성취하실 왕적 메시아임을 밝힙니다.

1아브라함과 다윗의 자손 예수 그리스도의 계보라 2아브라함이 이삭을 낳고 이삭은 야곱을 낳고 야곱은 유다와 그의 형제들을 낳고 3유다는 다말에게서 베레스와 세라를 낳고 베레스는 헤스론을 낳고 헤스론은 람을 낳고 4람은 아미나답을 낳고 아미나답은 나손을 낳고 나손은 살몬을 낳고 5살몬은 라합에게서 보아스를 낳고 보아스는 룻에게서 오벳을 낳고 오벳은 이새를 낳고 6이새는 다윗 왕을 낳으니라

1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah,9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah,11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Matthew introduced Jesus and Abraham as David’s descendants, asserting that Jesus was the Messiah who had come to fulfil God’s covenant to Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3) and David (2 Sam. 7:12-16). Matthew’s statement that each era in Israel’s history consisted of fourteen generations shows that everything had been a result of God’s intricate plan. The four women mentioned in the genealogy (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Uriah’s wife) were Gentiles or married to Gentiles and their marriages were unusual. This shows that Jesus accepts all people, even the lowliest in this world, without discrimination (vv. 1-17). 

Who is God?

Vv. 1-17 Despite the faithlessness of mankind, God faithfully kept his promises. The Israelites broke their covenant with God, so they faced ruin as a nation, but God did not forget his covenant with them and sent Jesus to allow them to enjoy the blessing of God’s kingdom. Our hope also lies in the faithful God. Because of God, who is faithful, we can sow seeds of hope even in times of despair. 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 3-6, 16 Five women are mentioned in the genealogy. The inclusion of these women, whose stories could be considered scandalous, shows that Jesus was the Messiah who came not only to save the Jews but also to save the Gentiles and that anybody could be saved through him. Considering that it is because of this gospel that we have been saved, how might we be causing others to be excluded?
