헤롯은 동방박사들에게 속은 줄 알고 베들레헴 지경에 있는 유아들을 죽입니다. 요셉의 가족은 천사의 지시를 따라 애굽으로 피신했다가 헤롯이 죽은 후 나사렛으로 돌아옵니다.

13그들이 떠난 후에 주의 사자가 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되 헤롯이 아기를 찾아 죽이려 하니 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 피하여 내가 네게 이르기까지 거기 있으라 하시니 14요셉이 일어나서 밤에 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 떠나가 15헤롯이 죽기까지 거기 있었으니 이는 주께서 선지자를 통하여 말씀하신 바 애굽으로부터 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이라

 16이에 헤롯이 박사들에게 속은 줄 알고 심히 노하여 사람을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 기준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니 17이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 말씀하신 바 18라마에서 슬퍼하며 크게 통곡하는 소리가 들리니 라헬이 그 자식을 위하여 애곡하는 것이라 그가 자식이 없으므로 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 함이 이루어졌느니라

 19헤롯이 죽은 후에 주의 사자가 애굽에서 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되 20일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가라 아기의 목숨을 찾던 자들이 죽었느니라 하시니 21요셉이 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어가니라 22그러나 아켈라오가 그의 아버지 헤롯을 이어 유대의 임금 됨을 듣고 거기로 가기를 무서워하더니 꿈에 지시하심을 받아 갈릴리 지방으로 떠나가 23나사렛이란 동네에 가서 사니 이는 선지자로 하신 말씀에 나사렛 사람이라 칭하리라 하심을 이루려 함이러라

13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Matthew explained that Jesus departing to Egypt to flee from Herod and returning again was the fulfilment of a prophecy. Herod’s killing of male infants was also the fulfilment of a prophecy by Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 31:15-17, God comforted Rachel, who lamented the Israelites being taken captive to other lands, by promising restoration (vv. 16-18). Matthew also asserted that Jesus growing up in the remote mountainside region of Nazareth was another fulfilment of a prophecy. In accordance with the prophecies about a Messiah who would be regarded with contempt and put to suffering (Ps. 22; Isa. ch. 11; Isa. ch. 53), Jesus, who was born as a simple country person would restore the whole world (vv. 19-23). 

Who is Jesus?

Vv. 13-18 Jesus comforts us of our past sorrows and guides us into hope-filled promises. Matthew saw through Jesus that Israel’s tragic history was being repeated, but he also saw the future fulfilment of the promise of salvation and restoration. Jesus comes to us in our time of sorrow. He embraces us and guides us to seats of hope. 

Vv. 22- 23 Jesus fulfilled God’s will by coming in the form of a lowly person. He shattered the prejudiced idea that nothing good could come out of Nazareth (John 1:46) and saved all humankind. Do you believe that you need a strong educational background, a respectable career and a high social status to accomplish God’s will? Whatever your current situation, you can still shine a light wherever you go.

Lord, help me to gain confidence and comfort in Jesus and to do my utmost to fulfil the calling that you have entrusted to me.
