서기관과 바리새인보다 더 나은 하나님 백성의 ‘의’는 더 진실하고, 더 용서하고 사랑하며, 온전하신 하나님의 성품처럼 더 온전하게 사는 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 

[ 마태복음 5:33 - 5:48 ] (찬송420장)

33또 옛 사람에게 말한 바 헛 맹세를 하지 말고 네 맹세한 것을 주께 지키라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 34나는 너희에게 이르노니 도무지 맹세하지 말지니 하늘로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 보좌임이요 35땅으로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 발등상임이요 예루살렘으로도 하지 말라 이는 큰 임금의 성임이요 36네 머리로도 하지 말라 이는 네가 한 터럭도 희고 검게 할 수 없음이라 37오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라

 38또 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로 갚으라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 39나는 너희에게 이르노니 악한 자를 대적하지 말라 누구든지 네 오른편 뺨을 치거든 왼편도 돌려 대며 40또 너를 고발하여 속옷을 가지고자 하는 자에게 겉옷까지도 가지게 하며 41또 누구든지 너로 억지로 오 리를 가게 하거든 그 사람과 십 리를 동행하고 42네게 구하는 자에게 주며 네게 꾸고자 하는 자에게 거절하지 말라

 43또 네 이웃을 사랑하고 네 원수를 미워하라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 44나는 너희에게 이르노니 너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 박해하는 자를 위하여 기도하라 45이같이 한즉 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 아들이 되리니 이는 하나님이 그 해를 악인과 선인에게 비추시며 비를 의로운 자와 불의한 자에게 내려주심이라 46너희가 너희를 사랑하는 자를 사랑하면 무슨 상이 있으리요 세리도 이같이 아니하느냐 47또 너희가 너희 형제에게만 문안하면 남보다 더하는 것이 무엇이냐 이방인들도 이같이 아니하느냐 48그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 온전하심과 같이 너희도 온전하라

33“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Jesus taught that we shouldn’t make reckless oaths but should only speak the truth (vv. 33-37). Jewish people believed that the Law of ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ advocated personal vengeance. However, Jesus taught that we need to be gracious towards those who have caused us harm in line with the spirit of the Law (vv. 38-42). Although the Law merely commanded love for one’s neighbour (Lev. 19:18), Jesus taught that it was important to love one’s enemies as well. Loving one’s enemy is the true reflection of God’s perfection and loving without discrimination is what truly distinguishes God’s children (vv. 43-48). 

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 33-37 Disciples need to speak honestly. Showy rhetoric and swearing by another authority can be ways of disguising one’s greed and deceitfulness. Do you see how the world is being ruined by deceitful words that pollute society? Let’s speak only the truth from our mouths. 

Vv. 38-48 Vengeance leads to further and greater vengeance. Jesus taught us to end the wicked cycle of vengeance. This means giving up the right to vengeance and choosing to forgive and love instead. It means rather than repaying unjust demands with equally unjust actions, we should respond in a new way that is a manifestation of God’s love. How do you respond in the face of injustice?

Prayer

Lord, help me to live as a person of love, compassion and truth in this world of deceit, vengeance and hate.
