1 아닥사스다 왕이 왕위에 있을 때에 나와 함께 바벨론에서 올라온 족장들과 그들의 계보는 이러하니라

2 비느하스 자손 중에서는 게르솜이요 이다말 자손 중에서는 다니엘이요 다윗 자손 중에서는 핫두스요

3 스가냐 자손 곧 바로스 자손 중에서는 스가랴니 그와 함께 족보에 기록된 남자가 백오십 명이요

4 바핫모압 자손 중에서는 스라히야의 아들 엘여호에내니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 이백 명이요

5 스가냐 자손 중에서는 야하시엘의 아들이니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 삼백 명이요

10 슬로밋 자손 중에서는 요시뱌의 아들이니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 백육십 명이요

11 베배 자손 중에서는 베배의 아들 스가랴니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 이십팔 명이요

12 아스갓 자손 중에서는 학가단의 아들 요하난이니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 백십 명이요

13 아도니감 자손 중에 나중된 자의 이름은 엘리벨렛과 여우엘과 스마야니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 육십 명이요

14 비그왜 자손 중에서는 우대와 사붓이니 그와 함께 있는 남자가 칠십 명이었느니라

15 내가 무리를 아하와로 흐르는 강 가에 모으고 거기서 삼 일 동안 장막에 머물며 백성과 제사장들을 살핀즉 그 중에 레위 자손이 한 사람도 없는지라

16 이에 모든 족장 곧 엘리에셀과 아리엘과 스마야와 엘라단과 야립과 엘라단과 나단과 스가랴와 므술람을 부르고 또 명철한 사람 요야립과 엘라단을 불러

17 가시뱌 지방으로 보내어 그 곳 족장 잇도에게 나아가게 하고 잇도와 그의 형제 곧 가시뱌 지방에 사는 느디님 사람들에게 할 말을 일러 주고 우리 하나님의 성전을 위하여 섬길 자를 데리고 오라 하였더니

18 우리 하나님의 선한 손의 도우심을 입고 그들이 이스라엘의 손자 레위의 아들 말리의 자손 중에서 한 명철한 사람을 데려오고 또 세레뱌와 그의 아들들과 형제 십팔 명과

19 하사뱌와 므라리 자손 중 여사야와 그의 형제와 그의 아들들 이십 명을 데려오고

20 다윗과 방백들이 레위 사람들을 섬기라고 준 느디님 사람 중 성전 일꾼은 이백이십 명이었는데 그들은 모두 지명 받은 이들이었더라

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

15-20절   사역을 맡기실 뿐만 아니라 함께할 동역자를 보내 주십니다. 에스라는 귀환하는 백성 중에 레위 자손이 없다는 사실을 알았습니다. 말씀에 근거해 성전을 바로 세우고 신앙의 개혁을 이루는 데 레위 자손이 꼭 필요했기에, 에스라는 지도자들과 명철한 사람들을 그 지방의 족장 잇도에게 보내어 레위 사람을 데려오라고 명령했습니다. 귀환을 주저하는 레위 사람을 설득해 모으는 일은 쉽지 않은 일이었지만 하나님의 선하신 도움의 손길이 이 일을 가능하게 했습니다. 하나님의 일을 함께 할 사람들이 필요하면, 돕는 사람을 준비해 두신 하나님을 믿고 기도하면서 사람들을 권면하고 설득합시다.

내게 주시는 교훈은 무엇입니까?

1-14절   에스라와 함께 바벨론을 떠나 예루살렘으로 올라간 2차 귀환자들의 명단이 등장합니다. 고국으로 돌아가는 길은 정착하여 살던 곳을 옮기는 일이었고, 이방인의 위험과 광야의 위험과 강도의 위험을 감수해야 하는 모험이었습니다. 그럼에도 믿음으로 신앙의 도전을 택한 이들이 있었고, 하나님은 그들을 통해 예루살렘의 재건과 개혁을 이끄셨습니다. 하나님의 나라와 뜻을 향한 신앙의 도전에는 감수해야 할 손해와 위험도 있습니다. 그렇더라도 우리는 그보다 더 큰 영광과 기쁨을 바라보며 오늘 기꺼이 손해 보는 선택을 내릴 수 있습니다.15-17절   바벨론에서 예루살렘으로의 초기 귀환 당시 포함된 제사장은 4289명이었고(2:36-39), 노래하는 자와 문지기를 포함한 레위인은 341명이었습니다(2:40-42). 제사장에 비해 레위인의 수가 턱없이 부족했습니다. 이러한 불균형은 에스라와 함께하는 2차 귀환 때에 더욱 두드러지게 나타났습니다. 백성이 레위 사람에게 주어야 할 몫을 주지 않았기에, 레위 사람들이 생계를 위해 주어진 직무를 떠났기 때문에 나타난 현상이었습니다(참조. 느 13:10). 레위 사람에게는 하나님이 맡기신 직무에 최선을 다하는 사명감이, 백성에게는 레위 사람의 형편을 살피고 생계를 지원하는 책임감이 필요했습니다. 오늘날 교회의 사역자와 교인들에게도 같은 태도가 필요하지 않을까요?

As I reviewed the people and the priests, I found there none of the sons of Levi.16 Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of insight,17 and sent them to Iddo, the leading man at the place Casiphia, telling them what to say to Iddo and his brothers and the temple servants at the place Casiphia, namely, to send us ministers for the house of our God.18 And by the good hand of our God on us, they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi, son of Israel, namely Sherebiah with his sons and kinsmen,18;19 also Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his kinsmen and their sons,20;20 besides220 of the temple servants, whom David and his officials had set apart to attend the Levites. Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

About 5,000 Jews returned to Jerusalem with Ezra in the second exile. Although this number was small compared to the 50,000 who returned in the first exile, they were committed to restoring the temple and offering sacrifices to God once they arrived (vv. 1-14). When Ezra noticed that the Levites were missing from among the group of exiles, he quickly sent leaders to invite them. In response to his earnest request, some Levites willingly joined the exiles (vv. 15-20).

에스라와 함께 2차로 예루살렘에 귀환한 유대인은 5천 명가량입니다. 1차로 귀환한 약 5만 명에 비하면 적은 수지만, 성전과 제사의 회복을 위해 헌신한 사람들입니다(1-14절). 에스라는 귀환 행렬 중 레위 지파 사람들이 보이지 않자 급히 지도자들을 보내 그들을 초청합니다. 그의 간절한 요청에 몇몇 레위인들이 기꺼이 귀환 대열에 합류합니다(15-20절).

Who is God?

Vv. 17-18 God provides the necessary help to those committed to doing good. Bringing the Levites back was a difficult process, but Ezra did his part, and God responded favourably. God's help is often experienced when we take steps of obedience in faith. Faith in action and God's help go hand in hand. What acts of obedient faith are you taking today?

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 1-14 Although the exiles were excited to go back to their homeland, it took courage to leave behind the familiar they had known. They obeyed God’s call even in the face of an uncertain future. What is more valuable to me: the comfort of a familiar reality, or the call to build a holy community that pleases God?

귀환자들은 고향으로 돌아간다고는 하지만, 익숙한 삶의 터전을 버리는 결단이 필요했습니다. 그들은 불확실한 미래에도 하나님의 부르심에 순종했습니다. 나에게는 무엇이 더 가치 있는 삶입니까? 안정된 현실인가요, 아니면 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 공동체를 세우는 삶인가요?
