1 선지자들 곧 선지자 학개와 잇도의 손자 스가랴가 이스라엘의 하나님의 이름으로 유다와 예루살렘에 거주하는 유다 사람들에게 예언하였더니

2 이에 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨과 요사닥의 아들 예수아가 일어나 예루살렘에 있던 하나님의 성전을 다시 건축하기 시작하매 하나님의 선지자들이 함께 있어 그들을 돕더니

3 그 때에 유브라데 강 건너편 총독 닷드내와 스달보스내와 그들의 동관들이 다 나아와 그들에게 이르되 누가 너희에게 명령하여 이 성전을 건축하고 이 성곽을 마치게 하였느냐 하기로

4 우리가 이 건축하는 자의 이름을 아뢰었으나

5 하나님이 유다 장로들을 돌보셨으므로 그들이 능히 공사를 막지 못하고 이 일을 다리오에게 아뢰고 그 답장이 오기를 기다렸더라

6 유브라데 강 건너편 총독 닷드내와 스달보스내와 그들의 동관인 유브라데 강 건너편 아바삭 사람이 다리오 왕에게 올린 글의 초본은 이러하니라

7 그 글에 일렀으되 다리오 왕은 평안하옵소서

8 왕께 아뢰옵나이다 우리가 유다 도에 가서 지극히 크신 하나님의 성전에 나아가 본즉 성전을 큰 돌로 세우며 벽에 나무를 얹고 부지런히 일하므로 공사가 그 손에서 형통하옵기에

9 우리가 그 장로들에게 물어보기를 누가 너희에게 명령하여 이 성전을 건축하고 이 성곽을 마치라고 하였느냐 하고

10 우리가 또 그 우두머리들의 이름을 적어 왕에게 아뢰고자 하여 그들의 이름을 물은즉

11 그들이 우리에게 대답하여 이르기를 우리는 천지의 하나님의 종이라 예전에 건축되었던 성전을 우리가 다시 건축하노라 이는 본래 이스라엘의 큰 왕이 건축하여 완공한 것이었으나

12 우리 조상들이 하늘에 계신 하나님을 노엽게 하였으므로 하나님이 그들을 갈대아 사람 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 넘기시매 그가 이 성전을 헐며 이 백성을 사로잡아 바벨론으로 옮겼더니

13 바벨론 왕 고레스 원년에 고레스 왕이 조서를 내려 하나님의 이 성전을 다시 건축하게 하고

14 또 느부갓네살이 예루살렘 하나님의 성전 안에서 금, 은 그릇을 옮겨다가 바벨론 신당에 두었던 것을 고레스 왕이 그 신당에서 꺼내어 그가 세운 총독 세스바살이라고 부르는 자에게 내주고

15 일러 말하되 너는 이 그릇들을 가지고 가서 예루살렘 성전에 두고 하나님의 전을 제자리에 건축하라 하매

16 이에 이 세스바살이 이르러 예루살렘 하나님의 성전 지대를 놓았고 그 때로부터 지금까지 건축하여 오나 아직도 마치지 못하였다 하였사오니

17 이제 왕께서 좋게 여기시거든 바벨론에서 왕의 보물전각에서 조사하사 과연 고레스 왕이 조서를 내려 하나님의 이 성전을 예루살렘에 다시 건축하라 하셨는지 보시고 왕은 이 일에 대하여 왕의 기쁘신 뜻을 우리에게 보이소서 하였더라

요약: 대적들의 집요한 반대로 중단된 성전 건축이 선지자들의 독려와 하나님의 도움으로 다시 시작됩니다. 하지만 또 다른 방해와 장애물이 숨 돌릴 틈 없이 이어집니다.

하나님은 어떤 분입니까?

1-2절   신실한 일꾼들을 일으키셔서 서로 협력하여 선을 이루게 하십니다. 학개와 스가랴는 성전 재건이야말로 하나님 백성의 최우선 과제임을 상기시키며, 성전 재개를 독려했습니다. 스룹바벨과 예수아는 다시 시작된 성전 건축 공사에 앞장서서 주된 일을 도맡아 실행했습니다. 하나님은 말씀을 맡은 자들에게 예언의 말씀을, 몸으로 수고하는 이들에게는 마음의 완전함과 손의 능숙함을 주셔서 맡기신 일을 감당하게 하십니다. 오늘날에도 하나님의 교회가 온전히 세워지도록 필요한 사람들을 필요한 자리로 부르셔서 서로 협력하게 하십니다(엡 4:7-11).3-5절   하나님의 일꾼들에게서 눈길을 떼지 않으시고 돌보십니다. 유브라데강 건너편 지역의 총독 닷드내는 부하들과 함께 자신이 관리하는 영토에서 일어나는 성전 재건이 합법적인 일인지 의문을 품고 찾아왔습니다. 당시 권력자들의 방문과 질문은 그 자체만으로도 위협을 느낄 만한 일이었지만, 하나님이 유다의 지도자들을 돌보아 주신 덕분에 성전 공사가 중단 없이 진행될 수 있었습니다. 우리가 선한 일에 앞장서서 수고할 때, 때로는 적극적인 방해와 모함이 있을 수 있고 때로는 합법적인 테두리 안에서 추궁해 오는 어려움을 만날 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님의 돌보심이 그보다 크고 확실하게 우리를 감싸고 있음을 신뢰합니다.

내게 주시는 교훈은 무엇입니까?

1-2절   하나님의 말씀을 맡아 전하는 예언자들이 성전 건축 현장에서 몸으로 수고하는 이들 곁에서 때로는 말씀으로, 때로는 몸으로 함께하며 그들을 도왔습니다. 말씀을 전하는 이들이 말씀을 받는 이들의 땀 흘리는 현장과 동떨어진 곳에서 부추기는 말만 하지 않고, 그들 곁에 함께 있을 때 진정한 감동과 변화가 있습니다. 오늘 나는 누구와 ‘함께 있어’ 어떻게 ‘그들을 도울’ 수 있을까요?6-17절   제국 총독의 질문에 유다 장로들은 “우리는 천지의 하나님의 종이라” 하는 고백을 시작으로 그들의 신앙과 과거의 역사를 들려주면서 성전 건축 공사를 변호합니다. 불신 세상의 압박과 위협 앞에서 기억해야 할 것은 우리가 ‘천지의 하나님을 섬기는 자’라는 사실입니다.

1Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.2 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.3 At the same time Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus: “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?”4 They also asked them this: “What are the names of the men who are building this building?”5 But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until the report should reach Darius and then an answer be returned by letter concerning it.6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and his associates, the governors who were in the province Beyond the River, sent to Darius the king.7 They sent him a report, in which was written as follows: “To Darius the king, all peace.8 Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands.9 Then we asked those elders and spoke to them thus: ‘Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?’10 We also asked them their names, for your information, that we might write down the names of their leaders.11 And this was their reply to us: ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.12 But because our fathers had angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the people to Babylonia.13 However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree that this house of God should be rebuilt.14 And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, these Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;15 and he said to him, “Take these vessels, go and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site.”16 Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been in building, and it is not yet finished.’17 Therefore, if it seems good to the king, let search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the king for the rebuilding of this house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his pleasure in this matter.”

Thinking & Understanding

Encouraged by the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the people of Judah restarted the construction of the temple with Zerubbabel and Joshua. When the work resumed, Tattenai the governor of a province in Persia, came to inspect it. Unaware of King Cyrus’s decree, he mistakenly believed the people of Judah were plotting a rebellion. However, the elders of Judah explained they had been granted permission by Cyrus and they presented the returned temple vessels to show as physical proof. Tattenai and his officials then requested confirmation from King Darius and reported the situation accordingly (vv. 1-17).

유다 백성은 학개와 스가랴 예언자의 격려에 힘입어, 스룹바벨과 예수아를 중심으로 성전 공사를 다시 시작합니다. 공사가 재개되자 페르시아 관리 닷드내가 시찰을 나옵니다. 고레스왕의 조서를 알지 못한 그는 유다 백성이 반역을 꾀한다고 오해합니다. 그러나 유다 장로들은 고레스의 조서와 돌려받은 성전 기구들을 근거로 성전 재건의 정당성을 설명합니다. 이에 닷드내와 관리들은 다리우스 왕에게 확인을 요청하며 상황을 정리해 보고합니다(1-17절).

Who is God?

1-2, 5 God gives strength to his people through his Word. When Haggai and Zechariah delivered God’s message, the Israelites’ spirits were revived. The perseverance of the leaders also served as a great encouragement. When we remain in the Word, even in discouraging circumstances, God gives us the strength to start anew. Stand in the Word today, expecting God to speak life-giving words to you.

말씀으로 백성에게 힘을 주시는 분입니다. 학개와 스가랴를 통해 전해진 하나님의 말씀은 침체된 공동체를 다시 일으켰고, 지도자들의 열정은 공동체를 활기차게 만들었습니다. 낙심한 상황 속에서도 말씀 앞에 머무를 때, 하나님은 우리에게 다시 시작할 힘을 주십니다. 오늘도 그 말씀을 기대하며 말씀 앞에 서십시오.13-17 God turns crises into opportunities. The construction of the temple could have been halted due to the officials' investigation, but God used this crisis as an opportunity to accelerate the work. Through Tattenai’s petition, Cyrus' original decree was reaffirmed, and the temple construction was not only resumed but also received financial support ( 6:8).위기를 기회로 바꾸시는 분입니다. 관리들의 조사로 성전 공사가 중단될 수도 있었지만, 하나님은 이 위기를 도리어 중단되었던 공사에 박차를 가할 수 있는 계기로 사용하십니다. 닷드내의 상소를 통해 고레스의 조서가 다시 확인되고, 성전 건축이 재개될 뿐 아니라 재정 지원까지 받게 됩니다(6:8).
