1 요시야가 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 팔 세라 예루살렘에서 삼십일 년 동안 다스리며

2 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하여 그의 조상 다윗의 길로 걸으며 좌우로 치우치지 아니하고

3 아직도 어렸을 때 곧 왕위에 있은 지 팔 년에 그의 조상 다윗의 하나님을 비로소 찾고 제십이년에 유다와 예루살렘을 비로소 정결하게 하여 그 산당들과 아세라 목상들과 아로새긴 우상들과 부어 만든 우상들을 제거하여 버리매

4 무리가 왕 앞에서 바알의 제단들을 헐었으며 왕이 또 그 제단 위에 높이 달린 태양상들을 찍고 또 아세라 목상들과 아로새긴 우상들과 부어 만든 우상들을 빻아 가루를 만들어 제사하던 자들의 무덤에 뿌리고

5 제사장들의 뼈를 제단 위에서 불살라 유다와 예루살렘을 정결하게 하였으며

6 또 므낫세와 에브라임과 시므온과 납달리까지 사면 황폐한 성읍들에도 그렇게 행하여

7 제단들을 허물며 아세라 목상들과 아로새긴 우상들을 빻아 가루를 만들며 온 이스라엘 땅에 있는 모든 태양상을 찍고 예루살렘으로 돌아왔더라

8 요시야가 왕위에 있은 지 열여덟째 해에 그 땅과 성전을 정결하게 하기를 마치고 그의 하나님 여호와의 전을 수리하려 하여 아살랴의 아들 사반과 시장 마아세야와 서기관 요아하스의 아들 요아를 보낸지라

9 그들이 대제사장 힐기야에게 나아가 전에 하나님의 전에 헌금한 돈을 그에게 주니 이 돈은 문을 지키는 레위 사람들이 므낫세와 에브라임과 남아 있는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 온 유다와 베냐민과 예루살렘 주민들에게서 거둔 것이라

10 그 돈을 여호와의 전 공사를 감독하는 자들의 손에 넘기니 그들이 여호와의 전에 있는 일꾼들에게 주어 그 전을 수리하게 하되

11 곧 목수들과 건축하는 자들에게 주어 다듬은 돌과 연접하는 나무를 사며 유다 왕들이 헐어버린 성전들을 위하여 들보를 만들게 하매

12 그 사람들이 성실하게 그 일을 하니라 그의 감독들은 레위 사람들 곧 므라리 자손 중 야핫과 오바댜요 그핫 자손들 중 스가랴와 무술람이라 다 그 일을 감독하고 또 악기에 익숙한 레위 사람들이 함께 하였으며

13 그들은 또 목도꾼을 감독하며 모든 공사 담당자를 감독하고 어떤 레위 사람은 서기와 관리와 문지기가 되었더라

1-2절   요시야는 부왕 아몬이 갑자기 죽는 바람에 여덟 살 어린 나이에 왕위에 올랐습니다. 요시야는 31년간 통치하면서, 다윗을 본받아 율법을 철저히 지키며 하나님 보시기에 올바른 일을 했습니다. 일평생 변절하지 않고 변함없이 하나님 앞에서 신실하고 충성스럽게 살았다는 평가가 멋지지 않습니까? 나를 기억하는 사람들이, 누구보다 내 모든 삶을 아시는 하나님이 칭찬하실 삶을 살아갑시다.3-5절   요시야는 16세에 다윗의 삶을 본받아 하나님을 찾기 시작했고, 20세에 유다와 예루살렘에서 먼저 종교개혁을 단행했습니다. 그는 산당과 제단과 분향단을 부수었고, 므낫세가 내다 버린 우상을 아몬이 다시 가져와 숭배한 일(33:15, 22)이 또다시 생기지 않도록 우상들을 아예 가루로 만들었습니다. 그리고 300년 전 어떤 예언자의 말대로(왕상 13:2), 그는 우상을 섬긴 제사장들의 뼈를 제단 위에 불살랐습니다. 죄는 매우 깊이 뿌리 내립니다. 죄를 박멸하려면 완전히 뿌리 뽑아야 합니다. 다시는 사용하지 못하도록 우상을 가루로 만든 요시야처럼, 죄의 원인을 철저하게 제거해야 합니다.6-7절   요시야는 유다와 예루살렘뿐 아니라 북왕국 지역까지 직접 다니며 제단을 허물고 우상을 부수었습니다. 죄의 뿌리는 깊게 뻗을 뿐만 아니라 넓게 퍼져서 개인의 삶 전체에, 공동체 전반에 영향을 미칩니다. 죄를 근절하려면 우상숭배를 타파하기 위해 이스라엘 전역을 다닌 요시야처럼, 내 삶과 공동체와 사회에 숨어 있는 죄가 없는지 곳곳을 살펴야 합니다.8-13절   요시야는 26세에 방치된 성전 수리를 시작합니다. 성전의 헌금을 관리하는 사람들을 대제사장 힐기야에게 보내어 성전을 보수할 비용을 전달합니다. 힐기야는 다시 이 돈을 공사 감독자에게 맡기고, 감독자는 다시 일꾼에게 지불하여 성전 보수 공사를 진행합니다. 성전을 수리하는 일이 규모 있게, 체계적으로 진행됩니다. 모든 사역에 ‘대충’은 독입니다. 효과적인 전략과 효율적인 절차가 필요합니다.

1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherim, and the carved and the metal images.4 And they chopped down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he cut down the incense altars that stood above them. And he broke in pieces the Asherim and the carved and the metal images, and he made dust of them and scattered it over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.5 He also burned the bones of the priests on their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.6 And in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their ruins all around,7 he broke down the altars and beat the Asherim and the images into powder and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had cleansed the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.9 They came to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had collected from Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem.10 And they gave it to the workmen who were working in the house of the LORD. And the workmen who were working in the house of the LORD gave it for repairing and restoring the house.11 They gave it to the carpenters and the builders to buy quarried stone, and timber for binders and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had let go to ruin.12 And the men did the work faithfully. Over them were set Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to have oversight. The Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music,13 were over the burden-bearers and directed all who did work in every kind of service, and some of the Levites were scribes and officials and gatekeepers.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding

Josiah, who became king at a young age, did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He led the effort to purify Israel and the temple. He destroyed the high places and altars, ground the idols into powder, and scattered the dust on the graves of those who had worshipped them. He executed the priests who served idols and burned their bones. Josiah travelled throughout various regions of Israel to carry out these reforms (vv. 1-7). He also ordered the restorations of the temple, which had been neglected for about seventy years. He appointed supervisors for the work and secured the funds to complete it (vv. 8-13).

What lesson is God teaching me?

Vv. 4, 7 Sin takes deep root. We see an example of it when the people of Judah brought back idols they had once abandoned. To truly eradicate sin, it must be completely uprooted. Are there any sinful habits in your life? Are you allowing room for sin in your heart? Like Josiah, who ground the idols into powder, let us thoroughly remove every habit that gives rise to sin.

죄는 깊이 뿌리내립니다. 버려진 우상을 다시 가져와 섬길 정도로 말입니다. 죄를 박멸하려면 완전히 뿌리 뽑아야 합니다. 어떤 죄의 습관이 있습니까? 죄지을 여지를 남겨 둔 건 아닙니까? 우상을 빻아 아예 가루로 만든 요시야처럼 죄의 원인을 철저하게 제거합시다.

Vv. 6-7 Sin spreads widely. Once a sinful thought takes root, it can affect an individual's entire life and impact their community. Therefore, to truly eradicate sin, we must examine every part of our lives and every corner of our communities. Like Josiah, who travelled throughout Israel to eliminate idol worship, let us thoroughly examine our own lives, churches, and communities for any hidden sins.

죄는 넓게 퍼집니다. 잘못된 생각이 하나 들어오면 개인의 삶 전체에, 공동체 전반에 영향을 미칩니다. 그래서 죄를 박멸하려면 삶의 모든 부분을 살피고, 공동체 구석구석을 살펴야 합니다. 우상숭배를 없애기 위해 이스라엘 전역을 다닌 요시야처럼, 내 삶과 공동체와 사회에 숨어 있는 죄가 없는지 샅샅이 살핍시다.

Lord, by your grace, help us to uproot both the sin that is widespread and the sin that is deeply rooted within us.
